The North Carolina Correctional Association (NCCA) was established in August 1979 as a State Chapter Affiliate of the American Correctional Association (ACA). The Association is dedicated to the improvement of corrections and the training and development of correctional professionals. The Assocation was started in 1870. It has more than 23,000 members in the United States, Canada, and other countries.

Through its affiliation with the ACA, the members have access to training, educational materials, publications, bi-annual conferences, accommodations services, Corrections Today Magazine, discount programs, correspondence courses and a variety of other networking opportunities. The Association is committed to strengthening corrections by providing a forum through which corrections professionals, educators, students, volunteers, and interested citizens can participate. Through publications, workshops and other activities, the Association works to stimulate constructive action on correctional issues and policies that can more effectively respond to the needs of the clients served and the members it represents and be a "Voice in Corrections."
The NCCA presently has more than 800 members and is divided into seven regions in order to better serve its members. Each region elects officers who develop and sponsor activities such as annual training workshops and recognition events for members.
The Association holds an annual statewide conference in November hosted by one of the regions. Events include skills training workshops, Exhibitor's Hall, and an awards luncheon during which members are honored for outstanding service. A newsletter, THE COMPASS, is printed quarterly and distributed free to members.
The purposes of NCCA are to:
- Exert a positive influence on the shaping of state and national correctional policy.
- Promote the professional growth and development of its members.
- Enhance interagency understanding and coordination.
